Discoveries from the Shapell Roster: DC-Area Focus

If you are interested in genealogy, the Civil War, or local history, you'll find that and more in The Shapell Roster of Jewish Service in the American Civil War.

Join us as we explore the lives of soldiers and sailors from the DC, Maryland, and Virginia areas. We'll also show you how to use the Roster to find out information about your Civil War ancestors.

Adrienne DeArmas, the Director of the Shapell Roster, has 25 years of experience in primary source research, database and digital asset management, and storytelling (via exhibitions, books and websites), 12 years with the Shapell Manuscript Foundation, an MA in Museum Studies from George Washington University, and a BA in Anthropology from Emory University. Adrienne currently lives in a 1903 farmhouse 90 miles west of Washington, DC. The property includes a cemetery where the 19th century Southwood family is buried; and was once part of Lord Thomas Fairfax' Virginia land grant, established in the mid 1600s, and surveyed by George Washington.

Caitlin Winkler, Researcher, The Shapell Roster, joined the project in 2012 straight out of law school, fulfilling the team's quota for a Jewish Civil War nerd. Winkler has a JD from Washington & Lee University, and a BA in Historic Preservation from the University of Mary Washington. She previously interned with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Land Trust of Virginia before she parlayed her legal research skills into the life of history detective work. Caitlin currently lives in Cheyenne, WY with her Air Force pilot husband, Derek, 3 year old daughter Clara, and newborn daughter, Vivian.

Alexandra Apito, Researcher, The Shapell Roster, joined the project in 2013. In addition to her research duties, Apito produces social media content for the Roster. She has a Bachelor of Science in Historic Preservation and Art & Architectural History, a Master of Science in Historic Preservation from Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI, and studied Preservation and Art in Florence, Italy. Apito lives in Salem, MA, with her architect husband Bryan, daughter Elliott and son Martin.
